Incidents at Newhaven 2001 92 23.12.01 at 1027 Newhaven Mobile was tasked to Seaford Head following a report of a dog over the cliff. After visiting the owners, Coastguards were on scene at 1040, with Newhaven Lifeboat, that was on exercise agreeing to proceed to recover the animal using their "Y" boat. The dog, that did not survive the fall, was recovered to the beach and it's owners at 1120. _______________ 91 20.12.01 at 1800 Following a report of a 19ft, open fishing boat, broken down 100yds West of Newhaven Breakwater, Newhaven Lookout was manned and the Mobile proceeded to the West beach to observe the casualty while Newhaven Lifeboat launched. The Lifeboat was on scene at 1822 and towed the craft back to Newhaven Marina. ______________ 90 06.12.01 at 2259 Solent Coastguard received three reports of a red flare sighted between Newhaven and Peacehaven. The Coastguard Helicopter, Newhaven Lifeboat and Newhaven Coastguards were tasked. The lookout at Newhaven was manned at 2310 and the area scanned. At 2315 the Lifeboat proceeded to an area South of Peacehaven and Newhaven Mobile Tasked to the cliffs at the Meridian Peacehaven. A flare was see from Newhaven Lookout at 2330 bearing 220 at 3/4 mile, and the lifeboat tasked to investigate. By 2359 the lifeboat was along side and towed a yacht to Newhaven Marina. The 40 ft yacht, with one person on board (76 years old) called for assistance because of making little headway under power. ______________ 89 17.11.01 at 0747 Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to proceed to Seaford Head following a report of a man over the cliffs. With Coastguard, Police and Paramedics on scene at 0755, the full cliff team were paged to enable a cliff recovery to take place. By 0827 the cliff gear was set up and ready but the Police wanted their Helicopter that was on route to make the recovery. A body was recovered by Police Helicopter to Eastbourne Hospital, and at 0945 units stood down. _____________ 88 09.11.01 at 1800 Following a report from members of the public, via the Police, Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to search for a body in the river at the West Quay Newhaven. A body was located South of the swing bridge and recovered by the Newhaven Lifeboat "Y" boat. As the Police had concerns about the circumstances of the incident the whole Newhaven team were tasked, along with the "Y" boat, to make a search for a possible second person in the water. At 2000 the Police no longer required the search to continue, although they were still investigating the incident. _____________ 87 04.11.01 at 1215 A Motor Fishing Vessel that had broken down off of Belle Toute (near Birling Gap) requested assistance, and Newhaven Lifeboat was responding. Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to meet the casualty on arrival at Newhaven. ______________ 86 31.10.01 at 1149 Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to proceed to Saltdean to a report of two persons in difficulties in the water. Newhaven were on scene at 1200 and required the immediate launch of Brighton Lifeboat as there were two children in the water needing assistance. By 1204 Coastguards could confirm that the children were out of the water but in need of medical assistance, both suffering from hypothermia. It was established that the two thirteen year olds had been playing on a ramp, when one was washed off by a wave and the second went in to assist. Both were transferred to hospital by Ambulance. _____________ 85 24.10.01 at 1520 Newhaven Lookout was manned, Newhaven Coastguard on scene at the Buckle car park Seaford, and Newhaven Pilot scanned the sea following a report of a yacht in trouble in the Seaford beach area. The area was observed for some time and as nothing untoward seen, all stations were stood down. _____________ 84 20.10.01 at 1124 Following a report of a suspicious object on the beach Newhaven Coastguards Proceeded to Splash point Seaford to investigate. Once on scene it was established that the object was a 50 gal oil drum and no further action was required _____________ 83 20.10.01 at 1002 Newhaven Coastguards proceeded to the Martello Tower Seaford to a report of two swimmers that may have been in difficulties. Arriving on scene at 1011 nothing untoward was found. It was established that two swimmers had made shore safely and departed the scene. Newhaven returned to station. _____________ 82 19.10.01 at 0958 Lifeboats from Newhaven and Brighton, and Newhaven Coastguard were tasked to proceed to the Saltdean, Rottingdean area, where a fishing vessel was going aground. Newhaven Mobile was on scene at 1009 and observed the craft aground near Ovingdean. By 1020 Brighton Lifeboat had a line aboard and towed the craft off the rocks, and subsequently escorted the craft to Brighton Marina _______________. 81 16.10.01 at 0952 Responding to a report from a member of the public, Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to Seaford to observe a craft that may have been difficulties. Once on scene with the first informant, it was established that the craft had two persons on board and was at anchor. Attempts at communication with the vessel were unsuccessful, but observation indicated that the craft was in no difficulty and the incident was considered a false alarm with good intent. ______________ 80 14.10.01 at 1310 The Lookout at Newhaven was manned to observe a broken down vessel off "Old Nore" West of Newhaven. The casualty was towed to Newhaven by a fishing vessel where it was established that the problem was due to a faulty fuel pump and gauge. ______________ 79 13.10.01 at 0701 Responding to a request from the Police, Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to proceed to Roedean, where the Police had been called to a person threatening to jump from the cliffs. Once on scene Newhaven Coastguards assisted the Police to cordon off the area and stood by to render any other assistance while the Police negotiator spoke to the person. At 0824 the casualty walked back from the edge of the cliffs and was removed from the scene. ______________ 78 10.10.01 at 0931 Newhaven Mobile proceeded to Seaford Head to a report of two dogs over the cliff. With one of the dogs visible from the top, the full cliff team were tasked to attend. Once the cliff gear was rigged a cliff man was lowered to the dog that was visible, some 30 to 40 ft down, and after some effort the dog was recovered to the top in a "doggy bag" (a large bag carried for such occasions) safe and well. The cliff man was then lowered a second time, to the foot of the cliffs around 300 ft below to locate the other dog. Surprisingly, this dog had survived the fall and was recovered in a similar manner. Once retrieved the dog was taken to the local vets, where it was discovered to have suffered a fractured pelvis and chipped tooth. It is expected to make a full recovery with time and rest. ______________ 77 08.10.01 at 1711 Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to investigate a report of a person possibly washed off the end of the Breakwater at Newhaven. With near gale conditions, and seas breaking over the Breakwater Newhaven Lifeboat, and the Coastguard Helicopter were also tasked. The area was search by a number of teams on the shore, the Lifeboat and Helicopter, but nothing found. The incident was considered a false alarm with good intent. ______________ 76 07.10.01 at 1332 While on duty, Newhaven Mobile was tasked to proceed to Splash point Seaford where two off duty Coastguards had observed a teenager washed off the old outfall by the large seas. Fortunately the youngster was washed ashore, and assisted up the beach by his mates and the Coastguard. The casualty was subsequently taken to hospital in an Ambulance with his neck in a brace, as he appeared to have sustained neck and back injury during the incident. ______________ 75 28.09.01 at 0744 Newhaven Lifeboat and Coastguards were tasked to assist the Police and ambulance personnel with the recovery of a body from the water at Newhaven. ______________ 74 16.09.01 at 1502 While on duty Newhaven Coastguards maintained a watch over Newhaven Lifeboat and the Coastguard helicopter that had been tasked to an EPIRB, an automatic distress beacon that had been activated 20 miles south of Newhaven. With nothing found after a search all units were stood down. ______________ 73 15.09.01 at 1134 Sussex Police requested assistance with a search between Splash Point Seaford and Cuckmere, for a missing person who was possibly suicidal. Newhaven Coastguards, assisted by some of the Birling Gap Coastguards, searched the cliff top and some distance inland, between Seaford and Cuckmere, while Newhaven Lifeboat searched close inshore beneath the cliffs. At 1242 the Lifeboat was tasked to red flares from two persons on a broken down jet ski near Newhaven harbour. Having returned the jet ski to Newhaven the Lifeboat resumed the search at Seaford. With the tide having receded one team commenced a beach search under the cliffs. By 1422 the area had been thoroughly searched and with nothing found, all units were stood down. The missing person subsequently returned home safe and well at 1430. ______________ 72 10.09.01 at 0912 From a position at Rottingdean, a member of the public reported large amounts of smoke to seaward between Beachy Head and Rottingdean. Newhaven Lookout was manned, and, with 15 miles visibility the area was kept under observation with nothing untoward seen ______________ 71 09.09.01 at 1515 Solent Coastguard received a report from a member of the public reporting a blue hulled cabin cruiser broken down with five persons on board just off the rocks at the end of Newhaven breakwater. Newhaven Coastguards observed the craft from Newhaven Lookout and established that the craft was able to start its engine and return to Newhaven Marina unassisted. _____________ 70 09.09.01 at 1200 The yacht involved the incident no. 68, requested a tow from Newhaven Lifeboat as it had broken down ¾ miles South of Newhaven harbour. Coastguards assisted with the mooring of the craft in Newhaven Marina that had suffered engine failure while making for Brighton. ______________ 69 09.08.01 at 0838 Coastguards at Newhaven were requested to investigate a cabin cruiser ashore at the West Beach Newhaven. The craft was examined at 0907 and it was discovered to be above the low water line, there was nobody on board, but had two anchors down. Inquires were made at the local Mariners drew a blank, the Harbour authorities, police and customs informed. At 1010 the owner was located who said he had broken down the previous night and managed to beach the craft but had not informed anybody. ______________ 68 08.09.01 at 1436 Birling Gap and Newhaven Mobiles were tasked to proceed to the entrance to the Cuckmere River to a report of a yacht aground inside the river mouth. Newhaven Mobile was on scene at 1446 and located a 21-ft yacht aground, full of water with three persons on board. The persons were recovered to the shore, and the craft secured. Newhaven Lifeboat was requested to launch to assist with the recovery of this vessel. The Lifeboat was on scene at 1513, and, with the aid of a portable pump and the Lifeboat’s “Y” boat, the craft was towed off a shingle bank and out to sea. The yacht was subsequently towed to Newhaven at 1725. _____________ 67 08.09.01 at 1300 Coastguards, aboard the pilot boat, assisted a broken down yacht in the entrance to Newhaven port that had a fouled propeller. The craft was put alongside East quay and cleared 200 ft of net and line from the propeller, then returned to a berth in Newhaven Marina. _____________ 66 31.08.01 at 1810 A member of the public in Rottingdean, reported seeing flashing from a vessel 15 miles out to sea. Newhaven Coastguards were on scene with the first informant at 1830, and observed the craft in question. After monitoring the craft for sometime, the vessel headed for Brighton Marina and was showing no signs of distress. The flashing that had been observed was believed to be sunlight reflecting on the craft’s windscreen, the incident being considered a false alarm with good intent. ______________ 65 30.08.01 at 1523 Coastguards were tasked to proceed to Peter Leonard Marine on Denton Island, Newhaven, to an 83 ft, ex customs cutter that had a fire on board, with the fire brigade in attendance. Arriving on scene at 1528 it was confirmed that no persons were injured and that a welding spark igniting bilge oil started the fire. By 1614 the fire brigade had confirmed that the fire was extinguished. _______________ 64 27.08.01 at 2017 The full Newhaven Coastguard team and Newhaven Lifeboat were tasked to a person who had fallen off the breakwater at Newhaven. While on route a further report was received stating that the person had been recovered from the water and was at the top of the steps at the end of the breakwater, hence the Lifeboat was stood down. Coastguards and ambulance were on scene at 2020 to discover that the casualty, who was asthmatic and suffering from shock, although at the top of the steps, still had to be recovered via a vertical 15-ft ladder. While the paramedic was treating the casualty, the Lifeboat was re-tasked should it have been necessary to evacuate the casualty by boat. Once it was deemed that the casualty had recovered sufficiently he was assisted up the ladder using rope and harness. He was subsequently taken to hospital for a check up to ensure that he was ok. Fortunately, it was around two hours after high water that this incident occurred, otherwise this person would have fallen a greater distance onto rocks and sustained serious injuries. ______________ 63 25.08.01 at 1745 While returning to station from the previous incident Newhaven Coastguards manned Newhaven Lookout following a report of two missing divers from a dive boat that had broken down 8 miles South of Newhaven. Newhaven Lifeboat launched, Coastguard Helicopter Rescue India Juliet and Warships Explorer and Example were also tasked. At 1815 Newhaven Lifeboat was designated to take on scene command and “Pan” broadcasts made to all craft in the area. At 1826 a passing yacht reported recovering two divers and the helicopter and Lifeboat proceeded to that position. Once it was established that the divers required no medical assistance all units were stood down. The Lifeboat returned to Newhaven with the divers on board and in company with the dive boat that had rectified a fuel problem. ______________ 62 25.08.01 at 1657 Following a report of persons in the water from a capsized canoe Brighton Lifeboat was tasked and Newhaven Coastguards proceeded to Ovingdean, near Brighton. Once on scene it was established that the casualties, three children, were safely ashore and units stood down. ______________ 61 25.08.01 at 1405 Newhaven Lifeboat crew were paged and Coastguards tasked to proceed to the Beachcomber pub, Seaford, to a report of a child in difficulty in the sea. Coastguards were on scene at 1412, liaised with Seaford Lifeguards to discover that a 14 year old girl that was in difficulties, had been rescued by a boy of the same age. The Lifeboat was stood down and once details taken, Newhaven Coastguards returned to station. _______________ 60 24.08.01 at 1457 Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to 200 yds East of the Beachcomber Pub, Seaford, where a member of the public reported four persons (believed to be children) in difficulty trying to swim ashore and waving for assistance. Newhaven Lifeboat was launching. Coastguards were on scene at 1511 and searched the area as visibility was reduced to 500 yds in fog. The casualties, one adult and three children, were found safely ashore. At 1524 all units were stood down. ______________ 59 21.08.01 at 1310 A yacht in the entrance to Newhaven Harbour that had lost it’s steering, and had two commercial ships bearing down on her, was assisted by Coastguards aboard Newhaven Pilot boat. The yacht was escorted to the safety of Newhaven Marina. ______________ 58 19.08.01 at 1845 Newhaven Coastguards were paged to proceed to Saltdean to a report of a paraglider in the sea. Once on scene at 1855, the person in the sea was found to be a kite surfer who was in no difficulties. ______________ 57 18.08.01 at 0952 Following a request from Sussex Police who had a woman threatening to jump from the cliffs, Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to proceed to Saltdean. At 1005 Newhaven were on scene, to discover that the Police had apprehended the person, and had left the scene. ______________ 56 17.08.01 at 2029 A 45-ft motor cruiser reported a fire on board, 1.5 miles south of Newhaven. Newhaven Lifeboat launched, Coastguard helicopter IJ tasked and Newhaven Lookout manned. At 2040 the Lifeboat was alongside the casualty with the helicopter giving an ETA of 2059. The Newhaven Lifeboat crew had difficulty in extinguishing the fire and intended heading for the harbour ASAP, the helicopter being stood down. At 2100 the casualty entered Newhaven and berthed at the lifeboat stage to the waiting ambulance and fire crews. Once extinguished, it was established that the cause was a fire in the exhaust lagging. ______________ 55 15.08.01 at 2020 Newhaven Lifeboat had been launched to assist a 5.5 meter RIB that had broken down, half a mile South of Newhaven Harbour, with two persons on board. Newhaven Coastguards were on scene at “A” jetty in Newhaven Marina to assist with mooring and to obtain details of the incident. ______________ 54 12.08.01 at 1527 A yacht requested assistance, having lost its rudder 1.5 miles SW of Newhaven. Newhaven Lifeboat launched and Newhaven Lookout was manned. By 1600 the Lifeboat had the casualty under tow, and was alongside at Newhaven Marina with Coastguards taking details at 1635. ______________ 53 11.08.01 at 1325 Newhaven Lookout was manned after a motor cruiser broadcast a Mayday reporting that he had an engine failure South of a harbour, but not of his exact location. Newhaven Lifeboat was tasked, but stood down once it was discovered the boat was safely inside Newhaven Harbour. _____________ 52 06.08.01 at 1921 Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to Brighton Marina, to interview the crew of a French yacht that had been transmitting continuously on the calling and distress channel, channel 16. The Coastguard helicopter had previously been tasked, and had located the source of the transmissions. The yacht's radio was found to be faulty, and the crew advised to have the radio repaired before leaving the marina. _____________ 51 02.08.01 at 1112 Newhaven Mobile was requested to attend the Arco Dart at the North Quay Newhaven, which had reported a fire in the engine room and required the fire brigade. Newhaven Mobile was on scene at 1118 and by 1130 the fire was under control. The main coupling on the port engine to the gearbox had disintegrated and burst into flames. At 1143 the Mobile returned to station. ______________ 50 30.07.01 at 1630 Having just completed the previous incident at the West Beach, Newhaven Coastguards were approached by a sixteen-year-old boy who reported that he had hit, and cut, his head on the sea wall. He was suffering from headache and dizziness. First aid was rendered and an ambulance requested. By 1652 the boy was being transferred to hospital by ambulance and Newhaven returned to station. ______________ 49 30.07.01 at 1604 Newhaven Coastguards were paged to attend the West Beach Newhaven to a report of three children on lilo’s drifting out to sea. At 1611, with Newhaven Lifeboat being tasked, Newhaven Coastguards were on scene and observed three young girls on lilo’s being towed to the shore by canoe. The Lifeboat was stood down once it was confirmed that all were accounted for. _____________ 48 23.07.01 at 1402 Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to Saltdean, where a member of the public reported a small boat trying to recover a person from the water with difficulty. Newhaven Mobile was on scene at 1415 and observed the craft that was identified by the first informant, nothing appeared untoward. The casualty was contacted by loudhailer and it was indicated that all was well. Newhaven returned to station. _____________ 47 21.07.01 at 0702 While leaving Newhaven, the 32-meter survey vessel Telco Dover ran aground South of the harbour entrance. Newhaven Coastguards and Lifeboat were tasked to proceed. At 0715 Newhaven Mobile was on scene and observed the Telco Dover aground, South of the East Pier, having dropped both anchors and in a heavy swell. Newhaven Lifeboat attached a towline to the casualty to assist in keeping her bows into the sea while the anchors were recovered. A tug was requested to stand by in case the situation deteriorated. By 0820 the Telco Dover was clear of the shore with both anchors recovered and made her own way back into harbour guided by the tug and Lifeboat. _____________ 46 18.07.01 at 2020 Following the previous incident, Newhaven proceed to Ovingdean to a report of a fishing boat aground. Newhaven assisted in keeping the 17 ft boat afloat while a tow was attached and the boat recovered to Brighton Marina. At 2041 Newhaven returned to station. _____________ 45 18.07.01 at 1915 Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to proceed to the White Cliff café at Saltdean to investigate a report of a female seen entering the water fully clothed. Newhaven were on scene at 1923 and observed a woman 200 yds off the shore and a man in the surf. A helicopter and Lifeboat were requested to assist. Brighton Lifeboat, Shoreham lifeboat and Coastguard helicopter were tasked. The Police helicopter also attended. The man who had entered the water trying to save the woman, was recovered from the surf and suffered a hart attack. He was taken to hospital by ambulance. Brighton Lifeboat, arriving on scene, recovered the woman from the sea and returned her to Brighton Marina to an awaiting ambulance, which took her to hospital. At 2020 Newhaven tasked to a second incident. _____________ 44 15.07.01 at 1545 Having received a report of two persons cut off by the tide 200 yds East of Splash Point Seaford, Solent Coastguard tasked Newhaven Lifeboat and Newhaven Coastguards to proceed. Newhaven Mobile was on scene at 1556 and located the casualties, as the Coastguard helicopter, Rescue India Juliet over flew the area while on route to Lee on Solent with a sick diver on board. Newhaven Lifeboat deployed their Y boat (a small inflatable) to recover the casualties. With the prevailing sea conditions of a moderate swell Newhaven Coastguards, assisted by Birling Gap, deployed a cliff man to the beach to assist the Y boat crew. The Y boat recovered the casualties to Newhaven Lifeboat, and by 1659 the cliff man was recovered and the gear restowed. _____________ 43 08.07.01 at 0700 Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to observe a 49 ft yacht that was taking in water, two and a half miles South East of Newhaven Breakwater while Newhaven Lifeboat launched to attend the casualty. At 0720 the casualty was alongside with the lifeboat pumping out water. Newhaven returned to station at 0815. _____________ 42 03.07.01 at 0855 The chemical ship JOELM was heading for a position three miles south of Newhaven with a Philippine crew member suffering from severe back pain and numbness in the legs. Newhaven Lifeboat launched to meet the JOELM in mid channel. At 1045 the casualty was on board the Lifeboat which was now heading for Brighton Marina and requested an ambulance for their arrival. At 1112 Newhaven Coastguards were on scene at the Marina to assist with the evacuation of the casualty, returning to station at 1230. _____________ 41 30.06.01 at 1513 Having observed from Newhaven lookout five teenagers swimming in rough water 25 to 50 yds from the shore, just west of Newhaven Breakwater, Newhaven Coastguards proceeded to check that they were ok. Two of the teenagers managed to reach the shore and raise the alarm. Solent Coastguard, having received a report that some were in difficulties, tasked Newhaven Lifeboat and the Coastguards to proceed. The Mobile was on scene at 1514 and with the aid of a throw bag, buoyancy aid and line, and two members of the public, the remaining teenagers that were in difficulties were recovered to the shore safe well, but exhausted. ____________ 40 24.06.01 at 2120 Newhaven Lifeboat launched to assist a broken down fishing vessel off of Cuckmere and Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to assist with the craft’s arrival at Newhaven, and obtain details. Newhaven returned to station at 2210 ______________ 39 24.06.01 at 1836 Newhaven Coastguards were paged to proceed to the West Beach Newhaven to a report of a dinghy with two children on board drifting out to sea. At 1846 Newhaven were on scene with the first informant and observed the situation. The craft made it’s way to the shore safely, and Newhaven Coastguards had a chat with the children’s father. _____________ 38 23.06.01 at 1412 While on patrol, Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to investigate a report of a yellow and black speedboat broken down off Rottingdean. Brighton Lifeboat launched and towed the speedboat to Newhaven where details were taken. ______________ 37 17.06.01 at 1305 As members of Southdown Sector were attending a First Aid course, some members of the teams were tasked to proceed to Shoreham Beach to assist Shoreham Coastguard with a beach search for a missing male, believed to have jumped from Worthing Pier. Newhaven were on scene at 1330. At 1545 the search was complete, nothing found. _____________ 36 12.06.01 at 2126 The Police requested the attendance of the Coastguard helicopter Rescue India Juliet to a road traffic accident at Rodmell, to search for a possible missing person. Newhaven Coastguards were required to provide a communication link, but at 2140 the Coastguard resources were no longer required, and stood down. ______________ 35 6.6.01 at 1002 Solent Coastguard received a report of a yacht going aground at Ovingdean, between Rottingdean and Brighton. Newhaven Coastguards and Brighton Lifeboat were tasked to proceed. With Newhaven Coastguards and Brighton Lifeboat arriving on scene at 1015 it was established that there was only one person on board the small yacht that was aground on the rocks a few yards from the shore. One crewman from Brighton Lifeboat swam to the yacht, climbed aboard, and was able to attach a line to enable a tow to commence. The casualty was then towed to Brighton Marina. _____________ 34 19.05.01 at 1712 Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to proceed to Telscombe Cliffs Peacehaven where the Police had a report of a possible jumper. At 1725 while on route Newhaven were stood down as the Police had apprehended the person. _____________ 33 12.05.01 at 1725 After receiving a report from the police, Solent Coastguard tasked Newhaven Coastguards to a jetski and occupants stranded on the beach at Peacehaven. Newhaven were on scene at 1740 with the Police and Brighton Lifeboat already in attendance. The jetski, that had suffered impeller problems, and its occupants were returned to Newhaven Marina by Brighton Lifeboat where Newhaven Coastguards obtained details of the incident. _____________ 32 04.05.01 at 1940 Following a report of a sighting of a body by a coach party on a walk from Birling Gap, Eastbourne and Birling Gap Coastguard teams were tasked to search the area. As the position of the sighting was vague and subsequent information indicated that the body might have been West of the Cuckmere River, Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to search from Splash Point, Seaford to the Cuckmere River. Proceeding at 1955, the Newhaven team commenced a cliff top search over the designated area (a beach search was at the time impossible because of the state of the tide). At 2119, with the area between Seaford and Birling Gap searched, having found nothing all teams were stood down. _____________ 31 02.05.01 at 1015 Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to Newhaven Lifeboat station to meet the Lifeboat on arrival back at Newhaven. A person, suffering from chest pains, had been transferred from a fishing vessel to the lifeboat. The casualty was transferred to an Ambulance and taken to Brighton Hospital. _____________ 30 28.04.01 at 2316 Having received a sighting from a member of the public of what was believed to be a distress flare, two miles South of Rushy Hill caravan park, Peacehaven, Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to investigate, while a general broadcast was made requesting any information from craft in the area. Meeting the first informant on scene at 2235 the area was checked for any craft showing signs of distress. Finding nothing untoward Newhaven were stood down at 0034, the report being considered a false alarm with good intent. ________________ 29 28.04.01 at 0721 Newhaven Lifeboat was launched to a yacht two miles South of Newhaven with a rope around the propeller. Newhaven Coastguards manned the Lookout at 0742, observing the progress of the casualty. At 0807 the Lifeboat was alongside the casualty and commenced towing to Newhaven. Newhaven Coastguards met the casualty on arrival at the Marina. _____________ 28 27.04.01 at 1709 Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to proceed to Seaford beach, opposite the Beachcomber public house, where a personal water craft (a large four man jet ski) with two people on board, had broken down and was taking on water. Newhaven Lifeboat was also tasked. At 1719 Newhaven Coastguards arrived on scene and kept the casualty under observation until the arrival of the Lifeboat shortly after. The two persons on board were transferred to the lifeboat and their craft taken in tow to Newhaven arriving safely at 1750. _____________ 27 27.04.01 at 1105 Solent Coastguard, having received a report from the Police of three children stuck on the cliffs in front of the fort at Newhaven, tasked the Newhaven cliff team and Coastguard helicopter, Rescue India Juliet, to proceed. At 1115 the cliff team and IJ were stood down as information from the Police indicated that the incident had been resolved. _____________ 26 21.04.01 at 1400 While on normal duty, Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to proceed to the Saltdean area, where the Police have received information about a possible jumper. At 1415 Newhaven checked the cliff top and bottom between Saltdean and Peacehaven. Nothing untoward was found and Newhaven returned to station. _____________ 25 17.04.01 at 0930 The Newhaven Coastguard team and Coastguard Helicopter, Rescue India Juliet, were tasked to proceed to a caravan site in Peacehaven following a report of a dog and possibly it's owner that have fallen over the cliff. Newhaven Coastguards were on scene at 0940 and requested Newhaven Lifeboat launch, as locating the casualty was proving difficult, and also requested the backup of Birling Gap Coastguard to assist with possible cliff recovery. At 0958 with both Newhaven Lifeboat and I J arriving on scene, a person and dog were spotted on the beach by Newhaven Coastguard team members who were proceeding on foot to meet them. The dog owner was found to be safe and well, but very upset, as his dog, which had fallen over the cliff, did not survive. Newhaven Lifeboat and I J were stood down at 1003, while Newhaven and Birling Gap cliff teams recovered the dog up the cliff. At 1048 the cliff teams were stood down and returned to station at 1130. ____________ 24 13.04.01 at 2026 Brighton Lifeboat, Coastguard Helicopter, Newhaven and Shoreham Coastguards were tasked to a person who had jumped from Brighton Pier. At 2047 Newhaven were on scene to find that the casualty was out of the water and in custody of the Police. An Ambulance was also on scene but the casualty, who was the worst for drink, refused medical assistance. All units were then stood down. _____________ 23 07.04.01 at 0655 Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to proceed to a distressed female, whose car was stuck in shingle at the West Beach Newhaven. At 0725 the car was towed clear of the shingle and Newhaven returned to station. ______________ 22 06.04.01 at 0931 Divers, who were surveying the vessel Union Robin at the North Quay Newhaven, had discovered a car in the river, and it was feared that there might have been a body inside. Newhaven Coastguards were paged to proceed. At 1050, with the Police in attendance, the car was recovered by crane. No body was found, and it was established that the car had been stolen in January 1997. ______________ 21 03.04.01 at 1830 Following a report from a member of the public of a six man liferaft adrift, two miles South of Peacehaven, Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to investigate. At 1840 Newhaven were on scene, but poor visibility made it difficult to identify the object. At 1845 Solent Coastguard called out Newhaven Lifeboat. As the visibility improved the object was thought to be the damaged Portobello Buoy, which the Lifeboat soon confirmed. All units were then stood down. _____________ 20 31.03.01 at 2040 Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to proceed to Brighton, between Brighton Marina and Brighton Pier to investigate a report of a missing girl. After the area was searched and nothing found Newhaven were stood down. ________________ 19 31.03.01 at 1455 While on watch, Newhaven Coastguards observed a paraglider make a crash landing into a gorse bush 150 yds West of Newhaven Lookout. On investigation it was established that the pilot sustained no injuries and was assisted with the recovery of his canopy. ________________ 18 30.03.01 at 0351 The Newhaven Lifeboat was towing a catamaran, that had steering and engine problems, to Newhaven, and Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to meet them on arrival. At 0440 the casualty was berthed safely at Fishers quay. ________________ 17 24.03.01 at 1245 While on patrol Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to proceed to Black rock Brighton, to a report of a person in the water. At 1255, while on route, Newhaven were stood down , as the incident had been resolved. ______________ 16 21.03.01 at 0705 After a body had been found on the beach at Hove, Solent Coastguard required that an extended search be made. Newhaven Coastguard searched from Saltdean to Brighton Marina while Shoreham searched to the West of the Marina. Coastguard Helicopter Rescue Victor Alpha was also tasked to search the area. At 0850 the area had been searched, nothing found, and units stood down. _____________ 15 18.03.01 at 1900 A member of the public reported seeing an unusual looking object, two groynes West of Ovingdean Gap. Newhaven Coastguards were on scene at 1925, and, with the police and searched the area. The object (18 inches long, 6 inches diameter, rounded at one end and pointed at the other) was located in the surf line. Explosive and Ordinance Disposal were requested. At 2120 E.O.D arrived but had not seen anything like it before and decided to use a controlled explosion to "blow up the object". At 2233, after the area was cordoned off, E.O.D exploded the object. They consider it had explosive material inside it. Newhaven Coastguards returned to station at 2245. _____________ 14 15.03.01 at 1645 Brighton Lifeboat had launched to assist a speedboat that had broken down with 5 persons on board. Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to meet the craft on arrival at Brighton Marina. At 1710 the casualty was along side and some friendly advice given (there was concern for the lack of basic seamanship skills of the speedboat crew and the absence of a VHF radio). ______________ 13 12.03.01 at 1954 Newhaven Coastguards were called to a report from a member of the public of a loud whistling 200 yds East of Saltdean Lido. At 2008 Newhaven were on scene, scanned the coastline and to seaward, but found nothing. The first informant was interviewed and the foreshore rechecked. As still nothing was found, the incident was considered a false alarm with good intent. ______________ 12 07.03.01 at 0607 Newhaven Lifeboat was evacuating a man, who was suffering from chest pains, from a motor fishing vessel and Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to meet the Lifeboat on arrival back at Newhaven. At 0655 the casualty was in an ambulance on route to Brighton hospital. ______________ 11 06.03.01 at 1408 Following a report of a car in the river at Denton Island Newhaven, Newhaven Coastguard proceeded to liase with the police who were on scene. At 1420 a line was attached to the vehicle but it was not known if any persons were in the car, as by this time the car was submerged. A Police dive unit arrived at 1615 and at 1725, with the aid of a recovery truck, the car was recovered from the water when it was confirmed that no persons were trapped inside the car. Newhaven Coastguard were stood down at 1740. _____________ 10 01.03.01 at 2356 Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to proceed to Denton Island Newhaven to a possible suicide attempt. The police were already on scene and Newhaven Lifeboat was also being tasked. At 0007 hrs Newhaven were stood down as the casualty was under police control. _____________ 9 25.02.01 at 1044 Newhaven Coastguards were tasked to meet the Newhaven Lifeboat on its return from exercise having recovered a body from the sea off of Seaford Head. Coastguards assisted with the shore-side recovery, returning to station at 1245. _____________ 8 10.02.01 at 1650 Following a report from a member of the public via the police, Newhaven Coastguard were tasked to proceed to the West Pier Brighton, to investigate the possibility of a surfer being in difficulty. Newhaven were on scene at 1712 and started searching 3/4 of mile either side of the pier, questioning people in the area who may have seen the surfer. Nothing untoward was found, and the enquires made suggested that the surfer had not indicated any signs of distress. The incident was considered a false alarm with good intent. ______________ 7 03.02.01 at 1625 Newhaven Coastguard were tasked to Badgers Watch Peacehaven to a report of what is believed to a life raft in the area of the Portobello buoy. Once on scene with the first informant it was established that the object sighted was in fact the remains of the Portobello buoy. _____________ 6 03.02 01 at 1201 Responding to a report of a small fishing vessel in trouble, Newhaven Coastguard were tasked to proceed to the west beach Newhaven to observe the craft. The Newhaven Lifeboat crew were paged in anticipation of a launch, but was established that although the craft had experienced engine problems, assistance was not required. _____________ 5 02.02.01 at 0845 Following a report from Sussex Police of clothing and a suicide note, Newhaven Coastguard were tasked to proceed to Seaford Head. Team members from Newhaven searched the beach from Hope Gap near the Cuckmere River, to Splash point Seaford. The Police searched from Splash point East. Nothing was found and at 1040 Newhaven were stood down. ________________ 4 30.01.01 at 2017 Newhaven Coastguard assisted with the recovery of a sick person from the tug "Foxbay", who was taken to Brighton hospital. ________________ 3 27.01.01 at 1640 Following a report from a member of the public, Newhaven Coastguard were requested to investigate the possibility of oil pollution on the beach at Telscombe Cliffs, Peacehaven. No pollution was found, although one bird covered in oil was caught and taken to a wildlife rescue centre. ________________ 2 14.01.01 at 1422 While on duty at Newhaven lookout, Newhaven Coastguard observed a dis-masted yacht, bearing 220 degrees, distance 1 mile. Newhaven pilot boat was requested to stand by the craft while Newhaven Lifeboat was launching. At 1441 the Lifeboat was alongside the casualty and the pilot boat stood down. Two persons were removed from the yacht, which the Lifeboat towed back to Newhaven. At 1600 the yacht was safely alongside at the marina. ________________ 1 04.01.01 at 1604 Newhaven Coastguard were paged as backup for Shoreham Coastguard to a report of a windsurfer in difficulty off Brighton Pier. Arriving on scene at 1621 at the Peter Pan playground, Brighton, the casualty was visual 20 yds off the beach. Brighton Lifeboat was also on scene and had the casualty visual. Brighton lifeboat had the casualty on board at 1658 and returned to Brighton Marina. It transpired hat the casualty was a Kite surfer who launched from a beach in Hove.
